For immediate release – Chicago, IL January 12, 2013:
The Menomonee Judo Club started off 2013 in typical fashion by taking home 19 medals at the Military Arts Institute Junior Judo Tournament. The site of the tournament, Military Arts Institute is the home of the Wolf Junior and Paralympic Summer Judo Camp. ” We’ve rented MAI for the past four years for our Judo camp. It’s a fantastic space that gives us the opportunity to have tons of players from around the country working on the mat at the same time.”, explained Menomonee Judo head instructor, Brett Wolf.
The tournament gave many of the younger and less experienced Menomonee players a chance to gain valuable experience. ” It was a lot of fun to go out there and compete against players from other dojos. “, said Sofia Brown, who earned a silver medal.
The Menomonee contingent included three of it’s Paralympic players. These players train at clubs that were built through a partnership between World Sport Chicago, the Chicago Park District and Menomonee Judo. John Theoharis, who also trains with the Menomonee Judo coaching staff at Norwood Park Judo Club, took a silver and bronze medal at his first Judo tournament. ” When Sensei Brett told me that I was ready to compete at my first tournament, I was super excited. It ended up being an even better experience than I had hoped. “, proclaimed John.
Nadia ” Squirt ” Mantanez took a silver medal, losing only to her Menomonee teammate, Isabella Kurkulis. Nadia trains at Menomonee run dojos at Davis Square Park, Chase Park and Walter Payton College Prep. Thomas ” TJ ” Johnson earned a silver medal, also only losing to Isabella. Thomas trains at the Davis Square Park Judo Club as well as Chase Park Judo Club. ” This tournament was a great tuneup for some tough competitions that we have coming up in the next couple of months. “, said a very proud Sensei Wolf. Menomonee Judo will next compete as a group on January 27th in Milwaukee at the Wahadachi Judo Tournament.
